Celia Couture Wins Coveted Community Theatre Division’s Moss Hart Memorial Award Takes Prize for Arlington Friends of Drama’s “Wit”

Boston, MA, November 13, 2006 – The New England Theater Conference announces that Celia Couture, along with her cast and crew, will be honored with a prestigious Moss Hart Memorial Award for the Arlington Friends of the Drama (AFD) production of “Wit.” Couture will be honored in the Community Theater Division when awards are presented at NETC’s Annual Convention, November 17-19, at the Yale Omni New Haven Hotel, New Haven, CT.

“Wit,” a moving Margaret Edson play about a woman battling ovarian cancer, starred Christine Connor as Vivian Bearing. Connor was nominated for a 2005-06 Dash Award by the Eastern Massachusetts Association of Community Theaters (EMACT).

BJ Williams, a community theater veteran and EMACT consultant for 15 years, wrote in her review of “Wit:” “Celia’s concept was beautifully clear: combining Bearing’s harrowing journey through the agony of cancer with a lesson on how we might learn more about life, death, and the need for dignity and humanity. Celia seamlessly fused all performance and production components in this remarkable production.”

About the Moss Hart Memorial Award
The annual award is presented in five categories – professional, community, college, secondary school and children’s – to honor the memory of director and dramatist Moss Hart for his wit, sensitivity and enthusiasm for the theater and to recognize outstanding New England theatrical productions of plays that present affirmative views of human courage and dignity, have strong literary and artistic merit and exemplify fresh, imaginative, creative treatment within the playwright’s intent.

Couture is a past president of EMACT and a past president on the Board of AFD. She won a 1999 Moss Hart Award for her AFD production of M. Butterfly and has received several NETC/EMACT Best Director awards. Couture also headed a successful capital campaign for building renovations on behalf of AFD.
